Anthony Mills (Chief Executive)

altDr Anthony Mills is an ecologist and soil scientist. His academic background includes a B.Sc. Zoology (University of Cape Town), M.Sc. Environmental Geochemistry (University of Cape Town), M.Phil. Environment and Development (University of Cambridge) and a PhD in Soil Science (Stellenbosch University). Anthony consults on adaptation and mitigation and undertakes ecological research with a soil science focus. His consulting focuses on innovative, evidence-based solutions for adapting to climate change, conserving and restoring ecosystems, mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration, and capacity building in developing countries. He also conducts primary research on soil-plant relationships and ecosystem functioning through the Department of Soil Science at Stellenbosch University and is the primary author on 24 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

Anthony is presently working with the International Finance Corporation's (IFC) Advisory Services team on the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR). The program has a budget of approximately $300 million for Mozambique, Zambia and Niger and is being implemented by the World Bank, African Development Bank and the IFC. The objective of the program is to build resilience to climate change across all economic sectors. The focus of Anthony’s work within the IFC is to galvanize the private sector to invest in building climate resilience. In Mozambique, the focus is on forestry, tourism, ports and urban water supply. In Zambia, the three themes are dissemination of information via mobile phones, weather index based insurance and microfinance. In Niger, the focus is on dissemination of climate data, microfinance, insurance, irrigation and solar power.

The initial focus is on Mozambique, Zambia and Niger through the Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience (PPCR). Mike is currently leading the development of an Adaptation Fund project in Cambodia, which focuses on restoring degraded forest ecosystems to provide vulnerable rural communities with valuable non-timber forest products and a range of ecosystem services. Additional work conducted by Mike in C4 EcoSolutions includes the development of Project Documents, PIFs, Concept Notes for the Arab Climate Resilience Initiative (ACRI, UNDP), Nepal (UNEP), Mozambique (UNEP), Mozambique Limpopo River Basin climate-proofing strategy (UNDP/UNEP) and the management of supplementary planting and monitoring of over 200 ha of trial spekboom restoration sites for European investors.

Glwadys Aymone Gbetibouo (Climate Change and Environmental Consultant)

altDr Glwadys Aymone Gbetibouo has a PhD in Environmental Economics from the University of Pretoria and is an agricultural and environmental economist who specialises in climate change and agriculture. Since 2002, she has been involved in climate change research projects in Africa and has planned, implemented and monitored research activities on climate change vulnerability assessments and adaptation. Glwadys’ work has contributed significantly to the present understanding of the international community on the economics of climate change in African agriculture. She has experience in measuring the impacts of climate change on agriculture and the adaptation behaviour and vulnerability of rural communities to climate change and variability.

During her time at C4 EcoSolutions, since October 2010,  Glwadys has been involved in developing climate change adaptation project documents for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for LDCF and TACC projects. Additionally, Glwadys will be acting as the Chief Technical Advisor on behalf of C4 EcoSolutions for the Djibouti LDCF project on the implementation of NAPA priorities in the most vulnerable coastal zones and the Lesotho LDCF project on early warning systems. She has also been contracted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as an adaptation consultant to support the development of “Building Africa’s Resilience to Climate Change (BAREC)”. Under the BAREC programme, she provides advisory services for the implementation of the Pilot Programme on Climate Change Resilience (PPCR), a project funded under the Strategic Climate Fund and implemented in three countries, namely Mozambique, Niger and Zambia.

Roland Hunter (Climate Change and Environmental Consultant)

altRoland Hunter has an M.Sc. in Botany from the University of Cape Town. Roland's M.Sc. thesis investigated the phosphorus nutrition of proteas. After graduating, he spent a further year as a research assistant on a related project which aimed to improve fertiliser guidelines for commercial cutflower protea growers. Since joining the C4 team at the begining of 2011, Roland has primarily been involved in producing NRB reports, which assess the rate of deforestation as a result of domestic firewood consumption as a component of carbon credit-generating projects. He has also contributed several of C4's ongoing climate change adaptation projects and course development. Most recently Roland has become involved in a project aiming to assess the health and extent of carbon-rich peatlands in the Nuwejaars Special Management Area in the Cape Agulhas area.

Sarah Lewis (Climate Change and Environmental Consultant)

altSarah Lewis was born and educated in the UK where she obtained a B.Sc. Honours in Zoology from the University of Nottingham. Her dissertation focused on how supplementary food affects the reproductive success of Blue Tits Cyanistes caeruleus. She then moved to South Africa in 2010 where she completed a M.Sc. in Conservation Biology from the University of Cape Town and received the Johnson Family Trust Award for top student. Her thesis titled 'Valuing an ecotourism resource: a case study of the Boulders Beach African Penguin Spheniscus demersus colony' gave her an insight into the inportance of environmental valuation techniques that are promised to increase in importance in future conservation approaches. Prior to her university career, Sarah travelled to various parts of Africa, volunteering at wildlife rehabilitation centres in Limpopo Province and KwaZulu Natal. It was here that she discovered her passion for African wildlife and ecosystems and experienced firsthand many of the problems that they face. It was this experience that motivated her for a career in the conservation of the natural world. Within C4 EcoSolutions, Sarah is co-developing a NAPA for Myanmar.
